Pirates Sign Einar Diaz
12/21/06 – Einar Diaz, who had a brief stint with
the Expos in 2004 has signed a minor league
contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The 33-year-old catcher hit .225 with three home
runs and 31 RBI last year for Triple-A Buffalo and
Las Vegas while also playing in three games for
the Los Angeles Dodgers.  In parts of 11
seasons in the majors, Diaz has compiled a .
254 average, 21 home runs and 202 RBI.  He
has also played for the Indians, Rangers and
Cardinals.

Diaz was traded from Texas to Montreal on April
3, 2004 along with minor-leaguer Justin Echols
for Chris Young and Josh McKinley.  Diaz played
in 55 games for Montreal and hit .223 with one
homer and 11 RBI.       

Under terms of his deal with the Pirates, Diaz
would be paid $600,000 at the major-league
level and up to $225,000 in performance
bonuses.
