Mariners Acquire Jose Vidro
12/19/06 – The Seattle Mariners have acquired former Expo
Jose Vidro from the Washington Nationals in exchange for
outfielder Chris Snelling and relief pitcher Emiliano Fruto.
Vidro is coming off a season in which he hit .289 with seven
home runs and 47 RBI in only 125 games due to a left
hamstring injury. In 2005, he was limited to just 87 games
because of injuries to his right knee, ankle and quadriceps
muscle. He is expected to become Seattle ’s primary
designated hitter in 2007.
The 32-year-old Vidro broke into the majors with Montreal in
1997 and played eight seasons for the Expos before the team
relocated to Washington . He has a .301 lifetime batting
average to go along with 115 home runs, 550 RBI and a .363
on base percentage. Vidro represented the Expos at the All-
Star Game in 2000, 2002 and 2003.
The Mariners will assume $12 million of the $16 million that
Vidro is due on the final two years of his current contract.
