Acta Named Nats Manager

base coach Manny Acta was
named the new manager of the
Washington Nationals on Tuesday.
It is his first managerial position on
the major league level.

Acta, who had been the New York Mets third base coach
the past two seasons, was scheduled to interview for the
Oakland Athletics managerial opening this past Sunday but
withdrew his name from consideration.
After playing six years in the Houston Astros farm system,
Acta served as a coach or manager in the organization from
1992 through 2001. As manager of the Kissimmee Cobras
in 1999, he was named the Florida State League Manager
of the Year. He later managed the Licey Tigers in the
Dominican Winter League from 2002 through 2004,
earning Manager of the Year honors in 2003 after winning
the Caribbean World Series. This past spring he piloted
the Dominican Republic team in the inaugural World
Baseball Classic.
Acta served on Frank Robinson’s coaching staff in Montreal
from 2002 until the club relocated to Washington , D.C.
following the 2004 season. He now replaces Robinson as
the Nationals’ manager after he compiled a 152-172 record
over the past two seasons.
