Robinson Out As Nats Manager

Robinson ended his two-year run as the
Washington Nationals skipper on Sunday with a
6-2 loss to the New York Mets. The Nationals had
informed Robinson prior to Saturday’s game that
he would not be asked back to manage in 2007.
Washington finished the season in last place of
the National League East with a mark of 71-91. In
the Nationals inaugural season of 2005,
Robinson led the club to an 81-81 record. The
club honored Robinson with 20-minute ceremony
before the start of Sunday’s season finale at
R.F.K. Stadium.

Following a Hall of Fame playing career, Robinson became baseball’s first
African-American manager when he took over the Cleveland Indians in 1975.
He compiled a 1,065-1,176 record in 17 seasons as a manger that also
included stops in San Francisco , Baltimore , Montreal and finally Washington .
Robinson best showing came in 1989 when he led the Orioles to an 87-75
record and a second-place finish. He was later named the American League
Manager of the Year.
When Major League Baseball assumed ownership of the Expos, Robinson
was asked to take over as the team’s manager. Between 2002 and 2004, he
guided Montreal to 233 wins and 253 losses.
