Wetteland Out As Nats Bullpen Coach
6/16/06 – Former Expos reliever John Wetteland has
been let go as the Washington Nationals bullpen coach
because of “philosophical differences” with manager
Frank Robinson.
The Nationals bullpen was 7-12 with a 4.45 ERA with
105 walks in 210 1/3rd innings under Wetteland.
Robinson had apparently wanted to make the change
as far back as late April when Washington lost two of
three to St. Louis but was talked out of it by general
manager Jim Bowden. However, after poor showings
by the bullpen this week against Colorado, Bowden
consented with Wetteland’s dismissal.
Wetteland went 48-45 to go along with 330 saves and a
2.93 ERA over a 12 year major league career with the
Dodgers, Expos, Yankees and Rangers. He ranks ninth
on the all-time saves list.

Between 1992 and 1994, Wetteland recorded 105 saves for Montreal which is the
fourth most in franchise history. His 43 saves in 1993 were the most in team history
until Chad Cordero saved 47 games last season.
The Expos traded Wetteland to the Yankees for Fernando Seguignol and cash in
April, 1995. The following
season Wetteland led the American League with 43 saves and was named the
World Series Most Valuable Player. He was named to the American League All-Star
team in 1996 while with New York and again in 1998 and 1999 as a member of the
Texas Rangers.
Wetteland had spent the previous three seasons as a roving pitching instructor for
Texas. He replaced Bob Natal as the Nationals bullpen coach this past January and
will be offered another position within the organization.
