Big Unit Suspended
6/16/06 – Former Expo Randy
Johnson was suspended five games
by the commissioner’s office for
intentionally throwing at Cleveland’s
Eduardo Perez on Wednesday night in
a game at Yankee Stadium.

Johnson, who is currently 8-5 with a
5.32 ERA for the Yankees was ejected
along with manager Joe Torre in the
seventh inning of New York’s 6-1
victory over Cleveland.  Both benches
had been given a warning the previous
inning after Cleveland starter Jason
Johnson plunked Yankees’ catcher
Jorge Posada, causing the two to
exchange words.  Randy Johnson and
Torre were both also fined an
undisclosed amount by Bob Watson,
vice-president of on-field operations
for Major League Baseball.

Torre was given a one-game
suspension and will sit out Friday
night’s tilt in Washington.  Johnson is
expected to appeal his suspension,
allowing him to make his next start on
Monday against the Phillies.

Johnson was originally the property of
the Montreal Expos after being
selected in the second round of the
1985 amateur draft.  He made his
major league debut in 1988, going 3-0
in four starts.  Johnson posted a 0-4
record with a 6.67 ERA in 1989 before
getting dealt to Seattle in a trade that
brought Mark Langston to Montreal.
He has also pitched for Houston and
Arizona before another trade sent him
to New York prior to the 2005
season.

Now in his 19th major league season,
Johnson has won five Cy Young
Awards and been named to 10 All-Star
teams.  In 2001, he shared World
Series Most Valuable Player honors
with Curt Schilling.
