Former Expos Return For ALS Benefit
6/13/06 - Former players and employees of the Montreal Expos
gathered near the site of Jarry Park on Monday night for a
celebrity softball game to raise money in the fight against
amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS,) otherwise known as Lou
Gehrig's Disease.
The ALS Society of Quebec organized the event with all of the
proceeds from the $25 tickets, donations, concessions and
silent auction going towards research, raising awareness and
providing services to those inflicted with the disease within the
province.
The event was held on the 65th anniversary of Gehrig's death.
The New York Yankees first baseman and eventual Hall of
Famer was cut down in the prime of his career by the disease
and passed away at the age of 37.
Among the fomer Expos to attend the event were Andre Dawson,
Warren Cromartie, Steve Rogers as well as former general
manager Jim Beattie and team president Claude Brochu.
