Bay Named N.L. Player of the Month
6/6/06 - Jason Bay, who played two seasons in
the Expos farm system was named the
National League Player of the Month for May.
The award comes after the Canadian-born
outfielder won Player of the Week honors twice
in consecutive weeks.
The Pittsburgh Pirates slugger hit .321 for the
month while posting a 1.090 OPS and his 35
RBI were the most for any National League
player. Bay hit home runs in six consecutive
games and finished the month with 12, the
most ever by a Pittsburgh Pirate in May. He’s
the first Pirate to win the Player of the Month
Award since Barry Bonds did it in September,
1992.
Bay was originally drafted by Montreal in the 22nd round of the June, 2000
Free Agent Draft. He hit .304 for the Vermont Expos in 2000 and the following
year played in 38 games for Jupiter before being promoted to Clinton. In 87
games with the Lumber Kings, he hit .362 to win the Midwest League batting
title.
In March 2002, the Expos traded Bay and pitcher Jim Serrano to the New York
Mets for infielder Lou Collier. Four months later, Bay was traded to the Padres
organization before Pittsburgh ultimately acquired him in August, 2003.
