Barrett Suspended 10 Games, Will Appeal
5/27/06 – Former Expos catcher Michael Barrett, now of the Chicago
Cubs, was suspended 10 games on Friday for his role in a bench
clearing brawl in a game against the White Sox on May, 20.  Barrett, who
apologized for the incident following the game, will appeal the
suspension.

The melee took place in the second inning of last Saturday’s game at U.
S. Cellular Field.  A.J. Pierzynski of the White Sox bowled over Barrett in a
play at home plate, allowing the run to score as the ball got away.  As
Pierzynski got up, he and Barrett bumped into each other and Barrett
responded by punching Pierzynski in the jaw.  Both benches emptied
causing a 15 minute delay.  Barrett and Pierzynski were both ejected as
were Brian Anderson of the White Sox and John Mabry of the Cubs.

Originally drafted by Montreal in the first round of the 1995 amateur draft,
Barrett played for the Expos for six years before joining the Chicago Cubs
in 2004.
