"El Duque" Dealt To Mets
5/26/06 – Pitcher Orlando “El Duque”
Hernandez, once the property of the
Montreal Expos, has been traded from the
Arizona Diamondbacks to the New York
Mets in exchange for reliever Jorge Julio.
Hernandez had struggled this season in
Arizona. He was 2-4 in nine starts with a
6.11 ERA. He returns to New York
however where he became known as a
big-game pitcher while with the Yankees
and will be re-united with Willie Randolph,
a former coach with the Yankees and now
manager of the Mets.
“El Duque” was acquired by the Expos on
January 15, 2003 along with Rocky Biddle
and Jeff Liefer in the trade that sent
Bartolo Colon to the Chicago White Sox.
Hernandez missed the entire year due to
injury however and never appeared in a
game for Montreal. He was granted free
agency at the end of the season.
Hernandez defected from Cuba and broke
into the majors in 1998 with the Yankees.
He has a 72-53 lifetime record with 846
strikeouts in 1,050 1/3rd innings pitched.
“El Duque” has a 9-3 lifetime mark in the
postseason with a 2.55 ERA and has
struck out 107 batters in 106 innings. He
was the Most Valuable Player of the 1999
American League Championship Series
and has won three World Series rings
with the Yankees as well as one last year
with the White Sox.
