Nats Sale Brings Profit to MLB Teams
5/23/06 – As a result of the recent
sale of the Washington Nationals, the
other 29 major league teams will
each receive checks for $3.45 million,
the first installment of their profit after
contributing $4.14 million apiece to
buy the Montreal Expos for $120
million in 2002.
The Nationals were purchased for $450 million by a group headed by
Theodore Lerner and Stan Kasten on May 18.  The new ownership will take
control of the team between mid-June and mid-July.

Meanwhile, baseball commissioner Bud Selig has decided to pay out only
$100 million of the profit and store the rest in an emergency fund in the
event of a work stoppage.
