Pavano Shut Down In Rehab Start

5/17/06 – Former Expos pitcher Carl Pavano, on a rehab assignment with the
Double-A Trenton Thunder, pitched a pefect first inning against the Portland
Sea Dogs on Wednesday night but was taken out of the game due to arm
soreness.
Pavano faced the minimum three batters and retired the side on just nine
pitches before being lifted. He will be re-evaluated by the New York Yankees
medical staff. Pavano picked up the win in his start for the Thunder five days
earlier, giving up just one run on three hits while striking out six in six innings
pitched. It was his first start for Trenton since 1996 when the team then served
as Boston's Double-A affiliate. He went 16-5 that season and was named the
Eastern League Pitcher of the Year.
The 30-year-old righthander complained of lower back tightness just a week
before spring training started and began the season on the disabled list. He
made his first rehab start last Sunday for the Tampa Yankees, allowing three
unearned runs on four hits and five innings. It is expected that Pavano will
make one more minor league start before rejoining New York.
Pavano went just 4-6 in 17 starts last season for the Yankees after signing a
four-year, $40 million deal in December, 2004.
Originally drafted by the Red Sox in the 13th round of the 1994 Amateur Draft,
Pavano was dealt to Montreal in November, 1997 in a trade that sent Cy Young
Award winner Pedro Martinez to the Red Sox. Pavano pitched in parts of five
seasons for Montreal before another deal sent him to the Florida Marlins where
he was part of their 2003 world championship team.
Pavano has a lifetime record of 61-64 with a 4.27 ERA. He was a member of
the National League All-Star team in 2004.
