Big Unit Reaches 4,400 Strikeouts
5/5/06 – Former Expo Randy Johnson became just the third
pitcher in major league history to record 4,400 career
strikeouts when he set down Tampa Bay’s Nick Green in the
Yankees, 10-5 win at Tropicana Field on Thursday night.
Johnson won his third straight decision despite giving up five
runs on seven hits and two walks in 6 2/3rds innings pitched.
He improved his record to 5-2 on the season and 268-138 for
his career. His four strikeouts boosted his major league total
to 4,401. Only Nolan Ryan (5,714) and Roger Clemens
(4,502) have struck out more batters in the history of the game.

Johnson was originally property of the Montreal Expos after being selected in the
second round of the 1985 amateur draft. He made his major league debut in 1988,
going 3-0 in four starts. Johnson posted a 0-4 record with a 6.67 ERA in 1989
before getting dealt to Seattle in the trade that brought Mark Langston to Montreal.
He has also pitched for Houston and Arizona before a trade sent him to New York
prior to the 2005 season.
Now in his 19th major league season, Johnson has won five Cy Young Awards and
been named to 10 All-Star teams. In 2001, he shared World Series Most Valuable
Player honors with Curt Schilling.
