Robinson Wins 1000th Game As Manager
4/21/06 – Frank Robinson won his 1,000th game
as a major league manager Thursday night as his
Washington Nationals beat the Philadelphia
Phillies, 6-3 at Citizens Bank Park. Robinson, a
former Expos skipper, became the 53rd manager
to reach the milestone.
The Nationals got five runs in the first inning and
four in the second en route to the victory. Former
Expos first baseman Nick Johnson went 4 for 4
with a pair of home runs and three RBI while Billy
Traber worked 5 2/3rds innings to pick up the win
in his first outing in three years. Traber also
became the first left-handed starter to win a game
for the Expos/Nationals since Scott Downs on
June 22, 2001.
Following a Hall of Fame playing career, Robinson became baseball’s first African-
American manager when he took over the Cleveland Indians in 1975. He has
compiled a 1,000-1,095 record in 16 seasons as a manger that also included
stops in San Francisco, Baltimore, Montreal and finally Washington. Robinson
best showing came in 1989 when he led the Orioles to an 87-75 record and a
second-place finish. He was later named the American League Manager of the
Year.
As the Expos pilot between 2002 and 2004, Robinson posted a 233-253 record.
He led the Nationals to an 81-81 mark during their inaugural season in 2005.
