Kirk Reuter Announces Retirement
3/6/06 – Pitcher Kirk Rueter, who began his 13-year major
league career with the Expos and is the winningest left-
hander in San Francisco Giants history, has announced his
retirement.
The 35-year-old southpaw attempted to land a job with the
St. Louis Cardinals this spring but said he made the
decision to retire last week.
Rueter was drafted by Montreal in the 18th round of the 1991 amateur draft and
made his big league debut in 1993, going 8-0 for the Expos. It was the best
start for a pitcher since Hooks Wiltse went 12-0 for the 1904 New York Giants.
Rueter pitched for Montreal until 1996 when he and Tim Scott were traded to
San Francisco for Mark Leiter. Nicknamed “Woody,” Rueter compiled a career
record of 130-92 with a 4.27 ERA and pitched in the post season four times
including the 2002 World Series.
