DL Likely For Pavano
2/27/06 – Former Expos pitcher Carl
Pavano will have his first mound session
later this week but will most likely begin
the season on the New York Yankees
disabled list.
The 30-year-old righthander complained
of lower back tightness just a week before
camp opened. It was recommended that
he not throw off a mound for another 10
to 14 days while he worked on a "core
stabilzation program." Pavano has been
receiving treatment 2 1/2 hours a day,
five days a week. He is on target to see
his first game action on March 12,
however that would give him only four
spring appearances.
Pavano went just 4-6 in 17 starts last
season for New York. It was his first
season with the Yankees after signing
as a free agent in December, 2004.
Originally drafted by Boston in the 13th round of the 1994 Amateur Draft, Pavano was dealt to
the Expos in November, 1997 in a trade that sent Cy Young Award winner Pedro Martinez to
the Red Sox. Pavano pitched in parts of five seasons for Montreal before another deal sent
him to the Florida Marlins where he was part of their 2003 world championship team.
Pavano has a lifetime record of 61-64 with a 4.27 ERA. He was a member of the National
League All-Star team in 2004.
