Three Former Expos on U.S. Roster

2/15/06 – Three former Expos will represent the
United States in the upcoming World Baseball
Classic as USA Baseball and Major League
Baseball announced their 30-man roster on
Tuesday.

Reliever Chad Cordero as well as catchers Michael
Barrett and Brian Schneider were named to the team
after the roster had had been reduced from 42 players.  
The roster must be officially submitted on March 2, five
days before the United States plays their first game of
the tournament.

Cordero was one of 10 relief pitchers named to the
team.  He led the majors last year with 47 saves and
was the Rolaids Relief Man of the Year.  Cordero was
also named to the National League All-Star team for
the first time in his career.  He was originally drafted by
Montreal in the first round of the 2003 Amateur Draft
and made his major league debut with the Expos later
that year.

Barrett and Schneider are two of three catchers on the
United States squad.  Barrett played for the Expos for
six years before joining the Chicago Cubs in 2004.  
Last year he hit .276 with 16 home runs and 61 RBI.  
Schneider was drafted by the Expos in 1995 and played
in Montreal for five seasons.  Last year he hit .268 with
10 home runs and 44 RBI for the Washington Nationals.

The United States squad will begin their workouts on
March 3 at Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona.  They will
play an exhibition game against the San Francisco
Giants at Scottsdale Stadium on March 5 before opening
the tournament with a game against Mexico on March 7.
