Schneider Agrees to $16 Million Deal
1/17/06 - Catcher Brian Schneider and the
Washington Nationals have come to terms
on a four-year contract worth $16 million.

Schneider, who hit .268 with 10 home runs
and 44 RBI last year,  was originally
drafted by the Montreal Expos in the fifth round
of the 1995 amatuer draft.  In six seasons with
the Expos and Nationals, he has posted a
.256 average, 94 doubles, 37 home runs and
185 RBI in 504 games.

The 29-year-old backstop led all National
League catchers last season by throwing
out 37.7% of would-be basestealers.  He led
all major league catchers in the same
category the previous two seasons.  His .993 fielding percentage is the best in
franchise history for catchers playing in a minimum of 250 games.

Schneider, who missed 14 of Washington's final 16 games last season due to an
injured right shoulder, passed a physical on Monday.  He will make $2.7 million this
season, $3.5 million in 2007 and $4.9 million in each of the final two years of the
contract.

"Brian is one of the best defensive catchers in baseball and we're glad to be able to
keep him in Washington for at least the next four years," said Washington general
manager Jim Bowden.  "It is the goal of any organization to sign, develop and then
retain their own home-grown players, and this is what we've accomplished with
Brian's contract.
