Schneider, Cordero and Barrett on U.S. Roster
1/16/06 - Catcher Brian Schneider and relief
pitcher Chad Cordero, currently of the
Washington Nationals and formerly of the
Montreal Expos, have been named to the
initial U.S. roster for the upcoming World
Baseball Classic.
Schneider, who hit .268 with 10 home runs
and 44 RBI last year was one of six catchers
on the 42-man provisional roster. Another
former Expo backstop, Michael Barrett was
also named. Barrett posted a .276 batting
average and clubbed 16 home runs for the
Chicago Cubs last season.
Cordero is coming off a stellar 2005
campaign in which his 47 saves were the
most in the majors. He was selected to the
National League All-Star team and won the
Rolaids Relief Man of the Year Award.
The United States is allowed to submit a roster of up to 60 players by the Tuesday,
January 17 deadline. The team has until 24 hours prior to the first game on March 7
to submit a final 30-man roster.
