Bay Named to Team Canada
1/14/06 - Jason Bay, who played two
seasons in the Expos farm system, was
one of 23 players named to Canada's
30-man roster for the upcoming World
Baseball Classic.
Bay, currently of the Pittsburgh Pirates, will
be one of the more familiar names on the
roster along with Minnesota's Justin
Morneau and Milwaukee's Corey Koskie.
Relief pitcher Eric Gagne of the Los
Angeles Dodgers and starting pitcher Rich
Harden of the Oakland Athletics are both
recovering from injuries and will be unable
to participate.
Larry Walker, who recently retired after a
17-year major league career, was thought
to be a possibility for the team but will
instead serve as a coach for manager
Ernie Whitt.
Bay was originally drafted by Montreal in the 22nd round of the June, 2000 Free Agent
Draft. The outfielder hit .304 for the Vermont Expos in 2000 and the following year
played in 38 games for Jupiter before being promoted to Clinton. In 87 games with
the LumberKings, he hit .362 to win the Midwest League batting title.
In March 2002, the Expos traded Bay and pitcher Jim Serrano to the New York Mets
for infielder Lou Collier. Four months later, Bay was traded to the Padres
organization before Pittsburgh ultimately acquired him in August, 2003.
Bay had an outstanding 2004 campaign, winning the National League Rookie of the
Month Award in June, July and September. He posted a .282 batting average with 26
home runs and 82 RBI over 120 games and was named Rookie of the Year by the
Baseball Writers Association of America, The Sporting News and USA Today
Baseball Weekly.
Bay, a native of Trail, B.C., was a member of the 2005 National League All-Star team
and also represented Canada in the Home Run Derby.
The inaugural World Baseball Classic is a 16-team tournament scheduled to take
place March 3 through March 20. Baseball Canada has until 24 hours prior to the
first game to complete its roster.
