Mets Promote Carter
1/09/06 - Gary Carter, who was elected into
Baseball's Hall of Fame in 2003 as a
Montreal Expo, was promoted by the New
York Mets to manager of their Port St. Lucie
affiliate in the Florida State League.
Carter spent the first 11 of his 19 major
league seasons in Montreal before being
dealt to the Mets in 1985. He also played
for the San Francisco Giants and Los
Angeles Dodgers.
"The Kid" was an 11-time All-Star and was
the Game's Most Valuable Player in both
1981 and 1984. He also won three Gold
Glove Awards while with the Expos. In
New York, Carter was a member of the 1986
World Champion Mets club.
Carter rejoined the Mets organization in 2003,
serving as a minor-league instructor. The
following year he was Mets minor-league
catching instructor before finally getting his first opportunity to manage in 2005 with
the Gulf Coast Mets. Carter guided them to a 37-16 record and a birth in the league
championship series.
Carter said his ultimate goal was to become a major league manager.
