Big Unit Agrees to Deal With Diamondbacks
1/7/07 – Former Expo Randy Johnson has agreed
to a two-year, $26 million deal that will send him
from the New York Yankees back to the Arizona
Diamondbacks. The trade is expected to be
finalized on Tuesday.
The Yankees, who traded for Johnson two years
ago are slated to receive reliever Luis Vizcaino,
minor league pitchers Ross Ohlendorf and
Steven Jackson and minor league shortstop
Alberto Gonzalez.
Although he won 17 games in each of his two
seasons in New York, Johnson failed to win a
game in the postseason. In two starts he allowed
10 earned runs on 17 hits in 8 2/3rds innings.
Johnson was originally the property of the Montreal Expos after being selected in the
second round of the 1985 amateur draft. He made his major league debut in 1988 and
went 3-0 in four starts. Johnson posted a 0-4 record with a 6.67 ERA in 1989 before
getting dealt to Seattle in a trade that brought Mark Langston to Montreal. He has also
pitched for Houston and Arizona before the trade that sent him to New York prior to the
2005 season.
Over 19 seasons in the majors, Johnson has compiled a 280-147 record with a 3.22
ERA and 4,544 strikeouts. He has won five Cy Young Awards and been named to 10
All-Star teams. In 2001 he helped lead the Diamondbacks to the world championship
and shared World Series Most Valuable Player honors with Curt Schilling.
