HISTORY:
Originally the winter home of the Milwaukee Braves, West Palm Beach Municipal
Stadium was built in 1963 and was at the time one of the finest spring training
facilities in the country. Its futuristic design was the brainchild of architect Ray
Plockelman.
The stadium’s signature feature was a canopy that was constructed of pre-
stressed concrete installed in concave segments. It hung over many seats in the
grandstand providing shade from the hot Florida sun. The press box was
anchored to the outer ridge of the canopy and had all of the necessary electronic
connections for the working media. It was also the only stadium in Florida to have
two home clubhouses as well as one for the visiting club. The stadium was the
centerpiece of a complex that also originally featured three full-size practice fields
and two half-fields.
Municipal Stadium was also the spring training home of the Expos from the club’s
inception in 1969 through 1972 and again from 1981 to 1997. The West Palm
Beach Expos of the Florida State League also played here from 1969 through 1997.
After the Braves relocated to the Disney Wide World of Sports Complex in 1997 and
the Expos left for Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter in 1998, Municipal Stadium was
demolished. A Home Depot now occupies the site.
