HISTORY:
Located in Jupiter, Florida, Roger Dean Stadium was the home to Montreal Expos
spring training and their Florida State League affiliate, the Jupiter Hammerheads
from 1998 through 2001. The stadium was the centerpiece of the 2,000 acre
Abacoa Development which was also designed to include housing for 6,000
families, a college campus, business district and an 18-hole golf course plus other
recreational facilities.
The $28 million stadium and 12 practice fields is the only facility of it's kind on the
East Coast. The complex is one of only four in the country to host two major league
teams for spring training and the only one to house two full-season minor league
teams as well. Designed by HOK Sports Facility Group, the ballpark contains
seating that was designed to be lower to the ground for a better view of the field. It
seats over 6,500 fans and has room to accommodate another 200 on a grass
berm located in right field.
Montreal moved out of the complex after 2001 when owner Jeffrey Loria bought the
Florida Marlins and in turn sold the Expos to Major League Baseball. Loria liked
the Jupiter complex so much that he arranged to have the Expos and Marlins switch
spring training facilities.
