HISTORY:
Jarry Park was created in 1925 and quickly became a popular gathering spot for the
citizens of Montreal.  The city leased the park from the Jarry family until they
acquired it themselves in 1945.  The Montreal Alouettes of the CFL began using
Jarry Park as a training site in the late 1950’s and soccer joined the scene in 1966.

The baseball field at Jarry Park dates back to the early 1960’s.  Originally a 3,000
seat facility for amateur baseball, it was expanded to nearly 29,000 seats in time for
the Expos arrival in 1969.  Single deck seating lined the stadium along the first and
third base sides while a press box sat above arched seating behind home plate.  A
large set of bleachers was built behind the left field fence.  The major league’s first
multi-lingual scoreboard sat behind the fence in right field as did a public
swimming pool.

The popularity of the Expos made Jarry Park the site for other non-baseball events
such as Jehovah’s Witnesses conventions and a mass by Pope John Paul II.  The
Expos used the Jarry Park stadium until 1977 and it was later reconfigured for
tennis where it is still in use today.
